  10. We Need Your Help! • This is an opportunity to learn from each other's successes and struggles, share real-world “do's and don'ts” and “tips and tricks”, and work with the Pass It On Center in defining what it means to be a Quality AT Reuse Program.

Local, Federal, and National Impact • NATTAP, The Pass It On Center, the Rehabilitation Services Administration, and AT reuse programs around the country are watching and learning from RSA's AT Reuse Demonstration Programs as they evolve, grow, and face the future. • The experiences of this diverse set of programs (building on the preceding work of many individuals and organizations) will help inform the shape of AT Reuse in the future!

Pass It On Center and the National Assistive Technology Technical Assistance Partnership (NATTAP) collaborated to identify and classify AT device reutilization programs. • The Pass It On Center website now hosts the on-line database of AT reutilization programs in the United States originally developed by NATTAP.

  15. As of October 28, 2008, the number of states and programs listed has increased to 162. Of these: • 129 are reassignment programs • 74 are refurbishment programs • 44 are equipment exchange programs • 54 are reassignment and refurbishment programs that conduct reassignment, refurbishment, and equipment exchange reutilization activities • 16 conduct reassignment and exchange activities, and • 12 conduct refurbishment and exchange activities.

  16. National Task Force developed definitions for five different types of AT reutilization activities

  17. What is reuse? • Exchange: Connects users to directly exchange AT, similar to eBay or classified ads. • Reassign/Redistribute: Accepts AT for sanitization, identifies appropriate users, and matches to new consumer.

  18. What is reuse? • Refurbish: Similar to reassignment, but in addition the program restores AT to its original configuration, which may include repairing and replacing parts.

  19. What is reuse? • Remanufacture: Similar to refurbishing, but strips and builds AT to new configuration. We do not recommend remanufacturing. • Recycle: End-of-life breakdown of AT for disposal and/or reuse in refurbishing and remanufacturing.
