Dyads & Triads • 6 dyads & 3 triads (see syllabus for due dates) • Time • Dyad – 25 minutes as therapist & 25 minutes as client • Triad – each student spends 20 minutes as therapist • Content – may be real or made up at beginning; must begin processing real material beginning with Dyad #3 • When should we conduct our dyads/triads? • Reserve a room in the schedule book at the front desk in the clinic • Avoid heavy traffic times – best to do in the mornings or early afternoons • 2nd years have first priority over the rooms
Dyads & Triads • What do I bring on the due dates? • Dyad/triad summary (to be handed in) • Date, time, & room number from your session • What will we do with recordings on the due dates? • You will be placed in a peer evaluation group (PEG) for the semester • PEGs will break up & meet in specified locations to view tapes & provide feedback to one another • I will rotate among PEGs to provide feedback
Dyads & Triads • Summaries • No longer than one page • Write about your experience as both therapist & client • Include both content & process • Content • Facts of material being presented • What is said/discussed during the session (client lost job; one spouse cheated on the other; etc.) • Process • Feelings/emotions that are present but may not be verbally expressed • Patterns of interaction taking place in the session – parallel, symmetrical, complementary relationships • Feeling words should be in bold type
Therapy/Supervision Observations • Observe 5 hours of therapy & 5 hours of supervision (1 supervision observation must be a live supervision) • Types of supervision • Case consult • Video • Live • 5 different therapists & 5 different supervisors • Turn in observation write-up within two weeks • Do no more than 1 per week & alternate between therapy & supervision
Therapy/Supervision Observations • Write-Up • Use only clients’ first name • Must be written in clinic – confidentiality • Must be signed by 2nd year therapist(s) and/or supervisor • Separate sections for content & process • Process section should contain discussion of type of relationship between therapist and client/supervisor • Complementary • Symmetrical • Parallel • Therapy – describe homework assignment given to client, if any • Personal reaction
Desk Duty • 1st year students are required to do desk duty, for which you receive a Practice Management Certificate • Read “Desk Duty Responsibilities” in manual carefully • Shift times • Lunchtime on Monday-Friday • Evenings from 5:00-10:00 on M, T, Th, F • Saturdays from 9:45-2:00
Desk Duty • Dress code – professional attire • Men – slacks, collared shirt, socks, shoes • Women – dresses or skirts (knee length), slacks, blouses/sweaters • No jeans • No T-shirts • Swiping privileges – only use cards to open/close clinic during desk duty shift; 1st years are not permitted to use their ID cards to open the clinic at any other time
Desk Duty • Responsibilities • Answering phone & taking messages • Taking intake information & scheduling intake sessions • Calling 2nd years if clients cancel • Letting 2nd years know when clients arrive • Handling traffic coming into and going out of the clinic • Balancing payments & securing money at end of evening & weekend shifts • Closing the office
