General Beliefs of the religion • Reincarnation • One god (monotheistic) • They believed that they alone understand Christ’s message • They believe that other streams of thought within Christianity misinterpreted Jesus’ mission and sayings • They believe the body is inherently earthly and evil • They believe salvation is achieved by learning the secret knowledge of their spiritual essence • Essence which is a define spark of light or spirit • After death a person has a chance to escape their prison bodies and reunite w/ their supreme god

  3. Important gods and goddesses • The Gnostics god is unknown • Goddesses: There is no Goddesses; However, they do have a manifestation of the Devine (Basically fills in the spot of a goddess) • She was not created she was eminated • Sophia stands for Wisdom

  4. Religious leaders/ founders • The Gnostic leaders are: • Simon Magus- He was the earliest • Marcion- He organized Gnostic Congregations • Valentinus- He was the one who founded the largest and most influential school of Gnosticism • Carpocrates- Taught reincarnation for Gnosticism

  5. Sacred texts • Their sacred text is divided by Christianity’s “New Testament” and the Gnostic documentaries.

Important dates and events in religions history • Conversion to Islam and the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229) greatly reduced the remaining number of Gnostics throughout the Middle Ages • Irenaeus, who first used "gnostic" to describe heresies in 185 AD • The word "Gnosticism" does not appear in ancient sources and was first coined by Henry Moore in a commentary on the seven letters of the Book of Revelation

  12. Interesting Info. : • They believed in a group called the “Ogoad: Depth, silence, mind, truth, word, life , man and church. • Other groups called “Decad,” “Dodecad” and “Docecad”: Sophia (Wisdom) was part of and still is part of the “Docecad.”
