Average age of the nuclear fleets in the world France - EDF The French nuclear fleet - 58 PWR units (22 MOX) • Operated by EDF - 63 GWe installed - Connections to the grid : • Fessenheim in April 1977 • Civaux 2 in Dec. 1999 • Average age : 25 years Designed to operate 40 years or more • ensures competitiveness of electricity • prices • depends on the components : containment • structure and vessel can’t be changed • 60 years already approved or considered • in some countries (ex : USA) Average : 29 BULATOM-2011 Varna - 2011, June 2nd

The need of a comprehensive and long-term policy A policy taking into account the different timescales Nuclear energy remains a need for many countries despite Fukushima • ■ Objective of extending the current nuclear power plants lifetime • ■ Preparation of the future : • New EPR builds in France • Preparation of reactors’ future : R&D on GEN IV, JHR… • ■ Active policy in Spent Fuels & Radioactive Waste management Acceptance of nuclear energy relies on 5 pillars • ■ competitiveness, • ■ energy independence, • ■ fight against climate change, • ■ exemplar use of nuclear energy in terms of safety, security, • non proliferation, sustainability, • ■ exemplar management of radioactive materials and waste France calls for the highest level of safety BULATOM-2011 Varna - 2011, June 2nd
