iROD-Chat Interface Prototype Nevin Yang March 28, 2011
Background • iRODS (integrated Rule Oriented Data System) • Helps people organize and manage large collections of distributed digital data • iROD-Chat is a mailing list that people use to discuss iRODS issues or news, mostly for support • Current Web interface is Google Groups • http://groups.google.com/group/iROD-Chat/
Why? • Research Assistant for Dr. Rajasekar, one of leading researchers for iRODS, and have been interacting with iROD-Chat frequently • Interface can be improved for functionality that would provide more usability for both users and members of iRODS team • Difficult to browse • No collection of helpful statistics for iRODS members to analyze content archive
Purpose • Build an interface that shows the messages in the iROD-Chat discussion list and offers more features for users than previous version. • Major additions include: • Categories • To more easily browse the discussion list • Images • Ability to embed images in messages will help to illustrate problems more clearly • Statistics • Most viewed topics, site visits, most active users, post rankings, etc.
Major Functionality Required • View a discussion thread • Create a discussion thread • Reply to a discussion thread • Search for a discussion thread
Prototype • http://irodchat.forumotion.com/
Related Concepts • Principle of Control • Basic vs. Advanced search for beginner vs. expert users • Principle of Aesthetic-Usability Effect • Able to quickly and easily change themes if majority of users show a particular preference and an attractive interface will encourage more usage • Principle of 5 Hat Racks • Usage of categories to organize information (discussion list) • Mental Model • Leverage familiarity with previous discussion boards and forums
Issues • Introduction of categories means users must click more • Should there be a “view all” option? • Match categories with majority of users’ mental categories • Account creation • Should user registration be required to participate or keep current system of open access? • Linking mailing list with interface • Breadcrumbs navigation in prototype show duplicate name of category
