  2. Prelude • Promote regional and sub regional cooperation among member countries. Asian Highway (AH) has 141000 km long road network crisscrossing 32 Asian countries, out of which Bangladesh Part is 1769 km. • AH-1,AH-2 AH-41 • Keenly interested to see that the goals and objectives of AH are not only conceived but also achieved.

  5. Pedestrian Fatalities The statistics revealed that the pedestrian fatalities shows decreasing trend during 2002-2005. It sharply declined in 2006-07.   8. Prone areas of accidents • Nearly 37 percent in National Highways, • 12 percent in Regional Roads • 15 percent in Feeder Roads. • Nearly 40 percent at junctions in urban areas. • Accidents are highly clustered at some locations. Source: Accident Research Centre (ARC), BUET

  9. Types of Accidents • Hit pedestrian (43.7%), • Rear end collisions (16.4%), • Head on collisions (13.3%), • Overturning (9.4%). • These four accident types account for nearly 83 percent of the accidents Source: Accident Research Centre (ARC), BUET

  10. Vehicular Involvement in Accidents Over involvement of Buses and Trucks • In Accidents, • bus/minibus - 33% • trucks - 27% and • In fatal accidents • bus/minibus - 38% • trucks - 30% Source: Accident Research Centre (ARC), BUET

  12. Road Safety Policy Priority • The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) was established in 1995. The council formulated • “National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan 2008-2010”. The action plan has identified the following priorities: • Planning, Management and Co-ordination of Road safety • Road Traffic Accident Data System • Road Safety Engineering • Road and Traffic Legislation • Traffic Enforcement • Driver Training and Testing • Vehicle Safety • Road Safety Education and Publicity • Medical Services for Road traffic Accident Victims

  13. Measures for road safety • National Land Transport Policy has been prepared. • Establishment of Highway Police • Strict control of overloading of heavy vehicles • Enhancement of Enforcement and Regulations • Road safety component has now been given explicit consideration in the upgrading, rehabilitation and new road schemes • Motor vehicle Act updated with stringent provisions • Road safety issues are initiated to include in primary and secondary curriculum.
