  2. Intensive Reading What Kinds of Texts? • academic textbooks • articles • reports • essays • journals • tests (timed exams)

  3. Intensive Reading How Do Students Feel About These Texts? • might be very difficult to read • level might be too high for reader • you probably did not choose the topic • might be boring?

  4. How Do You Read Intensively? • read slowly • often read each word • take time to look up new words • take time to examine the grammar • good for language learning • good for understanding a topic deeply

  5. How Do You Read Intensively? Timed Exams Read strategically • Titles • Headings • Charts • Scan and skim for answers based on what the test questions are

  6. Reading Extensively What Kinds of Texts? • you choose the topic • texts are at your level and ability • can be fiction or non-fiction

  7. Reading Extensively Examples newspapers, magazines, websites, books, graded readers, comic books, graphic novels, even textbooks (if you like the topic) Anything! As long as you enjoy it.

  8. How Do You Read Extensively? • read rather quickly • But, your speed will vary (depending on what kind of information you want from the text) • You can skip parts and not worry about! • You try to understand the overall meaning (not details or deep meaning)

  9. How Do You Read Extensively? • You won’t be tested on anything, so the pressure is off • You will have to log your reading, so you have to do it for this class • You should enjoy it. If you don’t, then stop and find something else to read • You read as much as possible (daily)

  10. Why Should I Read Extensively? Why not just do intensive reading? Most academic reading is intensive reading. As a result, you might not have a chance to read a lot during a term (you’ve read deeply, not widely)

  11. Why Should I Read Extensively? What does extensive reading do? • Helps develop a habit/love of reading • Helps develop fluency in reading (which intensive reading might not do)

  12. Why Should I Read Extensively? I’m not being tested on this? Why not? • Many students say that having a test or any assignment due after the reading takes the fun out of the experience • You can do comprehension exercises to test yourself, but it’s not necessary. • You will keep a Reading Log to be sure you are doing the readings
