  1. DBA Overview Welcome to DBA 710 Cohort #1

  2. Where are you now? Up to this time you have: • Completed the admissions process • Received a welcome kit, tested your webcams, completed the colloquium preparation activities (in the Successful Online Learning course) • Completed several online tutorials • Received your textbooks • Scheduled to be here – the DBA Colloquium

  3. Purpose of Weekend Colloquia • The starting point of the 3-year DBA program • Meet key JIU personnel • Interact with cohort members • Opportunity to ask questions • Participate in discussions on pertinent issues

  4. JIU DBA Differentiators • Cohort-based mentored learning • Applied research approach • Real-world application of theory and practice • Opportunity to become a management generalist • No required residency

  5. The JIU DBA is not: • Designed for obtaining qualifications to teach in higher education • A traditional research (publish or perish) approach • Individualized study – cohort participation is required to successfully complete the degree • An easier way to obtain a doctorate – while flexible, the program is rigorous and will require commitment to complete.

  6. The JIU DBA is: • Flexible and accessible – allowing you to set your own study schedule to complete weekly requirements. • Designed to meet the needs of working practitioners • Definitive – if you keep on track, you will graduate in September 2010!

  7. DBA Course Structure • All courses are 8 weeks • Parallel mentoring courses provide guided processes to begin working on your dissertation from day one. • While you will participate in seminars and peer review activities, there are no required group activities in the courses • As a cohort, you will move through the curriculum in a prescriptive manner, no need to worry about what you will take next.

  12. Weekly Study Time • While it may vary, the coursework and mentor track are designed to be completed in the 20-25 hour per week timeframe. • The DBA requires work throughout the week, not just on weekends.
