Key Point 1: What is a compound? • A compound is two or more elements bonded together • A compound will have two or more capital letters H2O Br2
Key Point 2: What is a bond? • A bond is formed when electrons are shared or transferred between two elements to satisfy the octet rule (atoms want 8 valence electrons)
Key Point 3: What are the two types of bonds? • Ionic Bonds: Electrons are transferred between the atoms • Covalent Bonds: Electrons are shared between the atoms
Key Point 4: What is an ionic compound? • An ionic compound is formed between a metal and a nonmetal LABEL!!!
The metal (+ charge) will transfer all of its valence electrons to the nonmetal (- charge) so that each satisfies the octet rule • + ion and – ion attract and bond together
Quick check: Circle the ionic compounds NaCl H2O LiBr BaF N2
Key Point 5: What is a covalent compound? • A covalent compound is formed between two or more nonmetals sharing electrons • The nonmetals will share valence electrons so that each satisfies the octet rule
Quick Check: Circle the covalent compounds NaCl CO2LiBr MgF2 Cl2
Key Point 7: How can I distinguish between an ionic and covalent compound using experimental data?
