Gary Soto… • Is the author of three novels, a memoir, several young-adult and children’s stories, and eleven poetry collections. • He has won numerous awards for his work. • As “the writer Joyce Carol Oates has said, "Gary Soto's poems are fast, funny, heartening, and achingly believable, like Polaroid love letters, or snatches of music heard out of a passing car; patches of beauty like patches of sunlight; the very pulse of a life."
About his Life… • Gary Soto was born in Fresno, California, in April, 1952, to working-class Mexican-American parents. • At a young age, he worked in the fields of the San Joaquin Valley. • He was not academically motivated as a child, but became interested in poetry during his high school years.

A Quote from Gary Soto… • Where do you get your ideas for your novels, stories, and poems?I’m also a listener. I hear lines of poetry issue from the mouths of seemingly ordinary people. And, as a writer, my duty is not to make people perfect, particularly Mexican Americans. I’m not a cheerleader. I’m one who provides portraits of people in the rush of life.
