What’s the difference? The principle difference between a DPC and a SBCTC is that with an SBCTC the content is calculated on an external server, versus the internal nature of DPC. Vs.
Analysis Life cycle stages of the two ICT solutions DPC and SBCTC
Scenarios 1& 2 • Both the client and DPC used for 9 working hours, 220 days a year. The thin client is switched off at night, but 30% of DPC are left on all night in scenario 1. For scenario 2, 30% of DPC are left on over non-working days. • When the whole life cycle of DPC is calculated for each scenario the figures are as follows: 421kg CO2 emissions (S.1) and 528kg CO2 emissions (S.2).
Potential savings of more than 200kg CO2 by switching from DPC to SBCTC . . . Greenhouse gas emissions in the life cycle of DPC and SBCTC with a using time of 5 years
Resources demand in the categories abiotic material, water, and air of a DPC and SBCTC . • Use of abiotic material, water and air is twice as high in a DPC as in a SBCTC.
Conclusions/Recommendations • All things considered, SBCTC saves more than 65% of GHG emissions compared to the use of desktop PCs (during an entire lifetime). • Client technology still has some specialised installations that have high global warming potential and can result in high GHG emissions. Further green refinement of both client and DPC technologies is required to address this and the results of this should be made available by the industry • The maintenance of up-to-date statistical data regarding energy demand and the composition of IT products & its dissemination is essential in order to ensure further comparisons of ICT solutions. Client technology still has some specialised installations that have high global warming potential and can result in high GHG emissions.
