The Gateway Quiz covers the order of operations and operations on fractions. • Eight questions, no calculators allowed. • Must be passed with a score of 100% to pass Math 010. • Students have the chance to take several practice Gateway Quizzes before then, and Gateway-type problems are covered in class lecture and homework assignments. • The first Gateway Quiz is given in class during the fifth week of the semester. • The second Gateway is given in class two weeks later. • Students can take the Gateway once a week thereafter outside of class, after reviewing their previous quiz with a teacher or tutor and taking another practice quiz. • An overview of the specific Gateway questions follows:
Gateway Quiz Results (Fall 2008) : • Average score on Gateway Quiz 1 (taken in Week 5): • 49.6 % • Average number of attempts needed to pass: • 4.5 attempts(max = 13) • Average student passed in week 10 (max = 16) • All students who passed the other course requirements were eventually able to pass the Gateway quiz.
RESULTS OF 2009 SUMMER SPRINGBOARD PILOT PROGRAM: • Average Math ACT score of student group = 15.67 • 2 week program, 6 students, 18 class sessions • Average score on Baseline Gateway Quiz (taken Day 1): • 10%(lowest = 0%, highest = 25%) • Average score on Gateway Quiz 1 (taken on Day 5): • 81%(lowest=50%, highest = 100%) • Comparison average score on the same quiz given to all 210 remedial math students in Fall 2008: 49.6% • Percentage of students who passed (scored 100% on) the Gateway during the 2-week program: 100% • Average number of attempts needed to pass: • 2.7 attempts, after 10th class session (max = 5) • Comparison to Fall 2008: • 4.5 attempts, after 19th class session (max = 13)
