Function • The main function of fat is to provide energy. Additionally fat keeps us warm and protect organs.
Chemical Composition • Fatty acids are a chain of carbon atoms with hydrogen attached. • Saturated fat: maximal number of hydrogen atoms on each carbon atom. • Unsaturated fat: where two hydrogen atoms are missing form double bonds between two carbon atoms and become unsaturated.
Varieties of fat Saturated fat- it affects your cholesterol level, and a healthy diet should include less than 10% of calories from saturated fat. E.g. milk, cheese, and meat. Trans fat- it is a fat that has been altered by hydrogenation, which increases the shelf life of products. E.g. processed food, snack foods, cookies. Unsaturated fat- mostly from plants and it helps improve cholesterol levels. E.g. avocado, nuts, and vegetable oils.
Fun fact Thinking can make you fat! Brand new research, conducted at Laval University in Canada has shown that although thinking hard and concentrating doesn’t require any extra calories, it does stimulate the body to feel hungrier. So much so in fact that volunteers of the study that were asked to carry out mentally challenging tasks went on to eat 253 more calories (almost 30% more) in just one meal than those that were told to daydream.
