Drag Racers • Materials: large garbage bags or table cloth, tape, stopwatch
Drag Racers Procedure: • Tape 2 large garbage bags together to make a drag-chute • Measure a distance of about 20 – 30 meters for the “run way” • Have two people run with the drag-chute in between them • Try with the chute open and with it folded • Time each attempt
Drag Racers • Which method took longer? • When it was open • Why? • When the chute was open it has more surface area so there is more air resistance (DRAG) • Real life examples: • Drag race chutes for cars and space ships
Parachute Challenge • Your challenge is to create a parachute with the materials provided that will drop as slow as possible • We will be testing out the parachutes tomorrow. • The person with the best (slowest) parachute will then get to attach an egg to their parachute as a final test. • You have the rest of today’s class to work on your parachute. Please use this time wisely.
Parachute Challenge • Use your materials carefully as you ONLY get the amount listed below: • One sheet of plastic (half a garbage bag) • 2 meters of string • 10 pieces of tape
