Introduction • Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliot Trudeau. • Began political careers compaigning for socialist ideals. • Joined Liberal party when he entered federal politics in 1960. • In 1971, he married Margaret Sinclair and had 3 kids. They divorced in 1980. • He was the first prime minister to be a single parent. • In 1991, he married Deborah Coyne and had a daughter named Sarah. • Died on September 28 2000.

Major Accomplishments • 15th Prime Minister of Canada • Legalized homosexuality and created more flexible divorce laws such as Justice Minister. • Had his own game board in early 1980’s called “True dough mania”. • Became a charismatic leader inspiring “Trudeaumania”. • Dominated the Canadian political scene from 1960’s to 1980’s, before he retired in 1984.

Political Philosophy • “Reason before passion” was his personal motto. • He was in favor of individual rights, which made him an enemy of Quebec Nationalism. • He criticized Lester Pearson for supporting Bomarc Missiles in Canada with nuclear warheads. • Defended decriminalization of homosexuals.

  5. How is he remembered? • Introduced the “Criminal Law Amendment Act 1968-1969”. • The act legalized homosexuality, abortions, breathalzyer tests for suspected drunk people, and divorce laws. • His campaign attracted attention of many young adults and people saw Trudeau as a symbol of generational change. • Trudeau was a front runner and a favorite for the Canadian public.
