What is Psychology C. Scientific Method- learning through critical thinking by using observation, experimentation, and statistical analysis. - case studies: study a person in depth - surveys - longitudinal studies - experiments
History of Psychology `` • Charles Darwin --inspired us to study humans by looking at animals. • Wilhelm Wundt --father of psychology, led us to……. --introspection- looking into self and describing what is there • William James --wrote one of the first psy. text books, taught first class (1875) • Francis Galton • Heredity and influence on behavior Contemporary Psychologists • Sigmund Freud --studied the unconscious and its effects on personality • John B. Watson --studied impact of learning on human emotion
Present-Day Psychology • Eclecticism- process of making your own system by borrowing from two or more other systems. 6 APPROACHES OF PSYCHOLOGY------- • Biological approach- views behavior as influenced by biological structures • Behavioral approach- views behavior as the product of rewards/punishments and associations • Psychoanalytic approach- views the individual as the product of the unconscious. • Humanistic approach- view people as basically good and capable of helping themselves. (we strive to reach potential) • Cognitive approach- emphasis on how humans use mental processes to handle problems. (we think) • Sociocultural approach – view behavior as influenced by rules and expectations of the group.
