Why do we need ERP Protection in IEEE 802.11s Mesh Network? • It is mandatory as per IEEE 802.11, 2007 std. • Clause 9.13 requires ERP STAs to update NAV of NonERP STAs before initiating any ERP transmission. • Mandatory PICS requirements PC22, PC23 and PC29. • It would not be fair to suffer (low throughput, etc.) due to presence of NonERP STAs around. • Overlapped BSS situation where some of the member detects NonERP STAs would be more likely in mesh due to multi-hop nature. • 11s amendment does not talk of anything related to PHY and therefore it does not prevent anybody implementing 802.11s mesh on top of NonERP PHY. • 11n Refers to the ERP bit definitions for HT Protection.
