BUPT Requirements on WLAN Ad Push Date: August, 2013 Authors:
BUPT Abstract • We have proposed a new activity to improve downlink capacity to support important applications of WLAN such as vehicle Ad push. • This presentation gives some background information why we think low cost vehicle ad push is necessary and summarizes the requirements for the WLAN Ad push.
BUPT Introduction • Vehicle ad push • Due to the easy availability of public transports, great effect and profit of vehicle ad has been recognized. • The extensive development of radio access technologies has provide more flexible access opportunities for ad push. • WLAN Ad push will be a flexible and cost-efficient opportunity in the near future. • Current situations • Digital Broadcast technology: mainly used in vehicle ad push • Not real-time • Less flexible • High-cost • WLAN technology: Not utilized so much in vehicle push. • Transmission in real time • More flexible deployments and operations • Low cost • Broad bandwidth
BUPT Expected applications • Ad push from stores • Updated ads changing rapidly need to be spread in real time. • Fixed public transportation route and ads receivers (passengers) , as well as long time in public transportation, improves the transmission efficiency . • Ad push from bus stops • Real-time information, such as current news, weather forecasts and disaster warnings need to be available to passengers in real time. • Fixed location of bus stop makes information collection easy.
BUPT Issues • Limited channels in WLAN which results in poor transmission efficiency. • It is sometimes difficult for large number of stores to transmit their ads simultaneously. • Large rate and bandwidth for supporting immense ads push during a short time. • Large size of ads with heavy use of images, audio and video needs to be pushed. • Movement of vehicles and short time in bus stop results in limited receipt time. • It is sometimes difficult for stores to transmit large amount of ads with heavy use of images, audio and video in a short time. • Significant interference among vehicles close to each other which results in poor receiver experience. • It is sometimes very difficult to connect to an AP in downtown. • Coordinating receiving of Ad push and offering of internet access simultaneously. As an operator, we need to improve user experience of our customers, including both ad push senders and receivers.
BUPT Requirements for WLAN Ad push • WLANs need to provide better user experience compared to the digital broadcast in terms of timeliness, deployment flexibility, cost effectiveness, etc. • It is very important to enhance the downlink capacity to support huge size of video ads. Hopefully, the downlink capacity shall be increased in proportional to the size of ads pushed. • It is very important to enhance the resource allocation to support huge amount of ad push senders. Hopefully, different senders (e.g. street stores) push ads in orthogonal resource. • It is important to eliminate the interference among ad push receivers close to each other.
BUPT Proposed Goals • Enhanced downlink capacity for video ads push. • Enhanced channel allocation for multiple ad push senders. • Reduced Interference: • This is something we would like to have. It might, however, be difficult to explain quantitatively. • We need clear performance criteria that can be measured easily. • Examples of performance criterion: • Stability, Fairness: • These are very important features. But it will be difficult to set a goal that everybody agree. • Throughput, downlink Capacity: • Criterion that can be understood easily. 10 G bit/s of downlink capacity will be more understandable and acceptable for ad push in downtown in given large size of video ads.
BUPT Summary • In order to support the use case of vehicle ad push, • Near term solution • Promotion of the use of WLAN in ad push • Enhancement of 802.11 protocol for ad push services • Enhancement of interference control and management • Enhancement of channel allocation. • Improvement of downlink capacity. • Appropriate topics for the IEEE 802.11 community • Downlink capacity enhancement and interference management • Proposed goal: to achieve 10 G bit/s of downlink capacity Thank you very much!
