Player Identification Using Hand Signals
General Directions Both the first referee and second referee are to use the prescribed system of hand signals when identifying a player who commits a playing fault or an unsporting conduct fault. Verbal communication between officials should be avoided. When the second referee initiates an interruption of play for a center line or net violation, the number of the offending player is indicated to the first referee. The first referee repeats the number to the players, coaches, and spectators using the prescribed method. Numbers should be displayed by the referees near shoulder height in front of the body and held a sufficient amount of time to properly communicate the player number to all involved.
