COCKROACHES AS HEALTH PESTS • Produce various secretions which can affect the flavor of food. • Can transfer diseases like dysentery, diarrhea and other gastro-intestinal disorders. • Cockroach excrement and cast skins cause allergic reactions in some people.
COMMON SPECIES IN THE US 1. The German cockroach. 2. The American cockroach 3. The Oriental cockroach 4. The Brown-banded cockroach.
QUICK IDENTIFICATION A. Small cockroaches, usually winged, less than ¾” long • German Roach. • Brown-Banded Roach. B. Large cockroaches, winged or wingless, greater than ¾” long. • American Roach. • Oriental Roach.
GERMAN COCKROACH • Also referred to as the “croton bug”. • Most economically important pest. • Distinguished from other species by two dark stripes on the pronotum. • Usually found in kitchens and bathrooms.
Why are they so successful? • Produce the largest number of eggs per capsule. • Has the shortest developmental period 3. Females carry the egg capsules until ready to hatch. 4. Nymphs are smaller than most roaches.
AMERICAN COCKROACH • Commonly known as the “palmetto bug” or the “flying water bug”. • Adults are reddish brown to blackish brown, pale towards margin, wings longer than abdomen. • Usually found in dark, moist places like basements, sewers, crawl spaces, etc.
ORIENTAL COCKROACH • Also referred to as the “water bug”, “black beetle” or “shad roach”. • Adults are very dark brown or black with a greasy sheen. • Females have rudimentary wing pads, the wings of the males cover ¾ of the abdomen. • Found in high moisture situations like sewers, basements, drains, etc.
BROWN-BANDED COCKROACH • Light brown in color. • Has two light transverse bands across abdomen. • Generally found on ceilings, high on walls, behind picture frames, etc.
