Video & Performance Art • Performance art was born in New York in the 60s as the • result of cross fertilization between theater, dance, film, • video and visual art. • Some examples of performance art involved: • - Live performers interacting with filmed images projected onto surfaces • - Artists performing in front of the camera in their studios • - Artists using cameras and monitors as both theatrical propsand sculptural elements in their performances (Ex: Joan Jonas)

Peter Campus – Video Art • An American artist born in 1937 and brought up in New York • Developed an early interest inphotography, which his father taught him, and painting. • After military service, Campus studied film editing and worked in the film industry as a production manager and editor, making documentaries. • Known for his pioneering interactive and single channel video work of the early 1970s

  14. Joan Jonas – Video, Performance Art Was born in New York in 1936 Jonas is a pioneer of video and performance art. She began her career as a sculptor. By 1968 she moved into what was then leading edge territory: mixing performances with props and mediated images.
