Momentum • Momentum is “inertia” in motion • The symbol for momentum is p • Momentum = Mass x Velocity (kg. m/s) • The formula is p = mv
Question? • If the velocity of an object is zero, what is its momentum? • ZERO
Impulse • Impulse is an applied force for a given length of time. • Impulse = Force x time • Unit for impulse is N.s • Formula is J = Ft
Questions? • What happens to Impulse if you increase the amount of applied force for the same duration of time? • J = Ft • Impulse gets LARGER
More Questions? • What happens to Impulse if you increase the time a constant applied force acts? • J = Ft • Impulse gets LARGER
Example • A .22 g bullet is given a force for a short period of time when fired from a 6 inch barrel. The same bullet is given the same force for a longer period of time if fired from a long barreled rifle. So….the bullet fired from the longer Barreled rifle will experience a larger Impulse and have a higher muzzle velocity.
Impulse and Momentum • Impulse causes a change in momentum. • Ft = mv = m v • A force applied for a certain length of time will cause a change in momentum!
