  2. Stress? • One Definition: • when you perceive that the task is greater than you abilities

  4. When does the Carms process start?

  5. First and Second year 1. Electives • Blocked off time during the school year • One month in summer or two 2 weeks in area of interest 2. Research Projects • Many programs expect • Don’t have to be lead author but be involved and understand the process 3. Extra-Curricular • Clubs, groups, sports, employment……. Third year 1. Set up your electives early! • Even if you have to double book if you are not sure what you want to do.

  6. Fourth year 1. Electives (10 weeks) • Not the time to find yourself! • If going for a competitive specialty, do not waste an opportunity to do an elective at program that you are interested in and instead do an elective in a back up that you really don’t want and have little chance matching to (i.e. Peds/ER or Obs-Gyn/Surgery) • 3 weeks at places you want to go (X 2) • Some allow only two other want four weeks • 2 weeks at other programs (X 2) • Med Ed office can help • Have to pay ($100 to $340/3 weeks) • Find a place to stay (Some programs help) • Try to do with known people (program directors, admission committee, etc…. ) • Be active – speak up in rounds, class, etc… • “Secure your home base” – 50% of class matched to Ottawa • Do an elective in Ottawa, unless it is absolutely your last choice.

Letters of Reference • Extremely important • Make sure strong • Try to get from known people with in the specialty and/or from the programs that you want to go to. • Strategies • Wait until after evaluation, if strong then ask • Tell them up front that you would like a letter so they pay more attention to you. • Be straight up “Can you write me a strong, supporting letter” 3. Dean’s Letter • Important and you can omit negative comments

Applications • Very painful so start early • Everything that you have ever done • Most programs ask the usual questions • “Why you, why program, strengths, weakness” • Some ask odd questions • “Who is your hero and why?” • “What does professionalism mean to you?” • “What would you do with your day off?” • Apply across the country • Competitiveness change year from year so do not take any chances • Better to turn down an interview than not to get any at all • $250 base + $20 per program

Interviews • Offered in early December • Needs some OCD – check your e-mail often, response quickly – ensure that you get the interview and the date that you want • Try to put important interviews in the middle • Each program is very variable in approach • Ask around so you are not suprised • Some programs rank you before you walk into the door but still treat it like a date • Dress conservatively well • Be cool, calm, and confident

  10. Fourth year 6. Ranking • It is not rocket science – rank according to what you want! Be honest with yourself!

Ranking (early February) • It is not rocket science – rank according to what you want! - Be honest with yourself! • Do not limit yourself! • If you truly want a competitive specialty, you should rank all programs if not………. • The only true “back up” is Family Medicine • “A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush”

  13. Fourth year 8. “U” Day (also March 1st) • Tried for 2 or more specialties and got none • Limited themselves to a few programs/city • Got into the game too late • Weak letters of references

Bottom Line • DON’T BE LAZY! • Do electives, research projects, extra-curricular, etc…… • DON’T BE CHEAP! • Take your show on the road and do electives and interviews in other cities • Apply ever where • DON’T HAVE AN EGO! • Apply every where and rank everything • “Play the game” • DON’T BE AFRAID! • Make a decision • Go all out for what you want • There are always options
