  1. PPL1OM Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

  2. Brainstorm • When do you have to do CPR? • Who would you need to perform CPR? • Why would it be good to have CPR skills?

  3. Purpose • To pump blood through a victim’s body (supply’s organ’s with oxygen to minimize damage) • NOT to restart the heart – while this would be ideal, it only happens through CPR in a very small percentage of cases (mostly children and infants) • An automated external defibrillator (AED) is used for this purpose

  4. Procedure • Area check • LOCs • Call 911 (if adult) What do you tell them? • A – open airway B – look, listen & feel 10 seconds (if not breathing, give 2 NORMAL breaths and begin CPR) • Continue the rest of the primary assessment when you have help

  5. Initiating CPR • 2 breaths - open the airway - seal your lips/mask around the mouth of the victim (use mask to protect yourself) - give two normal breaths (small puff for an infant) • Landmark (make sure victim is on their back) - place the palm of your hand on the nipple line of your victim • Compressions - with straight arms and a straight back, give 30 compressions to the beat of “Staying Alive” • Repeat until 911 arrives, or help comes to relieve you

  6. CPR - Victim Differences

  7. Next… • Demo • Practice with a partner • Scenarios
