Born in Switzerland to an amateur painter and a professor of music . As a child Klee shows both musical and artistic talent but finally decided to be an artist. He studied at Munich’s Fine Arts Academy. Until 1914 Klee worked only in black and white or watercolor but during that year on a trip to Tunisia he saw the possibilities of the use of color. He was influenced by Cubism and was interested in both children’s and primitive art. His themes were from nature and the man-made world of buildings, and machines. His witty titles are almost as important as the paintings themselves. Klee taught at the Bauhaus from 1921 -31 then became a professor of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf. In 1933 9 of his works were included in the Nazi’s ‘Degenerate Art Exhibition’. He was able to escape the issues in Germany by returning to Switzerland where he continued to work until his death in 1940.
