Background • Mama Mia was a play before it was adapted to film. • Mamma Mia! is based on the songs of ABBA. • ABBA was a Swedish pop/dance group active from 1972–1982 and was one of the most internationally popular pop groups of all time, topping the charts again and again in Europe, North America and Australia. • Following the premiere of the musical in London in 1999, ABBA Gold topped the charts in the United Kingdom again.
ABBA • The group formed in Stockholm in 1972, and was comprised of AgnethaFältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-FridLyngstad. • ABBA is an acronym of the first letters of the band members' first names (Agnetha, Benny, Björn and Anni-Frid) and is sometimes stylized as the registered trademark ᗅᗺᗷᗅ.

Background • The musical was the brainchild of producer Judy Craymer. • She met songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson in 1983. • It was the song "The Winner Takes It All" that suggested to her the theatrical potential of their pop songs. The songwriters were not enthusiastic, but they were not completely opposed to the idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrNm9uMioG0 • In 1997, Craymer commissioned Catherine Johnson to write the book for the musical • The musical opened in London in 1999. It debuted on Broadway in 2001.
The Film • The film was directed by Phyllida Lloyd(who directed the original London stage production) and distributed by Universal Pictures in partnership with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson's Playtoneand Littlestar. • Though the world premiere of the film occurred elsewhere, most of the media attention was focused on the Swedish premiere, where the four members of the group ABBA joined the cast at the Rival Theatre in Stockholm, owned by Benny Andersson, on July 4, 2008. It was the first time all four members of ABBA had been photographed together since 1986.[ • This photo includes the film director and the four members of ABBA.
Film Trivia • All the cast performed their own singing. • Early in pre-production, the producers suggested including a newly-written original song, to qualify for the Academy Awards' Original Song Category. Former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus refused. Andersson composed some additional music, but the film was ineligible for the Original Song category because all songs were already published. • Chris Klein auditioned for the role of Sky. • Mandy Moore, Amanda Bynes, Rachel McAdams, and Emmy Rossum were all considered for the part of Sophie. Olivia Newton-John and Michelle Pfeiffer were considered for the part of Donna. • The beginning of "Super Trouper" is sung live, a cappella, by the actresses.
