Outcomes • ALL MUST recall that rubbing insulators together leaves them electrically charged and able to exert a force on each other. • MOST SHOULD recall the effect of forces between charged insulators. • SOME COULD explain the charge on insulators because electrons are moved and explain how this is important in a real life context.

Practical Time • To explain why a balloon sticks to a wall and how lightning conductors work we need to be able to explain how static causes forces. • Method • Take 2 plastic rods. • Rub one against a duster and place it on an upturned watchglass. • Take another rod. • Describe what happens.
What have we learnt? The forces between charges can be investigated using rods made of insulating materials. acetate rods What happens when two positively-charged acetate rods are placed near each other? The rods repel each other because they have the same overall charge. What will happen if one rod is replaced with a charged polythene rod? rods repel each other
How do opposite charges behave? polythene rod acetate rod When a charged acetate rod is placed near a charged polythene rod, the rods attract each other. Why does this happen? The polythene rod has an overall positive charge and the acetate rod has an overall negative charge. The overall charges of these rods are opposite and so they attract each other. rods attract each other

Use as many of the keywords to label and help explain how it sticks to the wall. Will it stay on the wall for ever? Why / Why not? 2) Now draw a thunderstorm cloud and the ground. Why does lightning strike? How can a lightning rod stop the lightning?
