  2. Gospels / Prophets A) Mary Virginity is explicitly mentioned: 1) St. Luke’s Gospel (Luke 1:34-35) 2) St. Matthew’s Gospel (Mt. 1:18-20) 3) OT – Isaiah 7:14

  3. Tradition • Mary’s virginity is given further testimony in the Church’s Creeds • 1) Apostles Creed “was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary • 2) Nicene Creed “by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. • 3) Liturgies of the Church have always celebrated Mary as the “Aeiparthenos” that is the “Ever-Virgin.”

  4. Fathers of the Church See the virginal conception as: • The sign that Jesus is truly the Son of God B) The fact that God assumed a human nature like our own 1) St. Ignatius of Antioch (CCC 496) 2) St. Justin (CCC 498) doctrine was met with opposition 3) Origin – (CCC 498)

  5. Magisterium Formally defined Dogma of Faith: A) Second Council of Constantinople in 553A.D. B) Explicitly taught by the Church’s Magisterium up to our own day.
