Explanation of the view • A theory that suggests human beings including the mind is material • Processes such as thought and life are nothing more than physical and chemical processes • Reductionism- idea that we can completely understand one kind of reality in terms of another kind • Hobbes also claimed although the mind seems to be an immaterial entity, it is really nothing more than a physical, material thing

Criticisms of the view • Thomas Hobbes was unable to provide explanations of mental activities in terms of physical process; this made it hard for people to accept his theory • A question that was never answered was how could a physical; even the most complex physical system produce mental phenomena that appears to have no physical characteristics • The theory of Dualism suggests that the mind and the body are two different things. The mind is immaterial and the body is material. The mind sends signals to the body but the body responds to it. The mind does not move the body.
