Development of a 3D cloud model with detailed warm and cold microphysics DESCAM (DEtailed SCAvenging Model) Flossmann and Pruppacher (1985) … Leroy et al. (2008) • Warm microphysical processes : aerosol particle growth and activation, droplet de-activation, growth of drops by condensation and collision-coalescence • Cold microphysical processes : homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, growth by vapor deposition, riming and melting, (splintering and wet growth) • 5 particles distributions: fAP : wet aerosol particle number fd : drop number fi : ice crystal number gAP,d : aerosol mass inside drops gAP,i : aerosol mass inside ice crystals

(2004) • - non hydrostatic, anelastic • solves the equations for u, v, w, θ, P, ρ and qv • transports the microphysical variables fAP, fd, gAP,d, fi et gAP,i. T and qv fAP, fd, gAP,d, fi and gAP,i Flossmann and Pruppacher (1985) … Leroy et al. (2008) Microphysical model • - Warm and cold microphysical processes • 5 distributions: fAP : wet aerosol particle number • fd : drop number • fi : ice crystal number • gAP,d : aerosol mass inside drops • gAP,i : aerosol mass inside ice crystals Total : 5 distributions x 39 bins = 195 microphysical variables per grid point Computation time:~200 times more expensive than the model with bulk microphysics DESCAM-3D = research model

The role of aerosol particles on precipitation and ice phase processes: observation versus 3D simulations MODEL VALIDATION DESCAM 3D: a 3D cloud model with detailed microphysics Example: a cumulonimbus cloud (CRYSTAL-FACE, Heymsfield et al., 2005) Comparison with airborne measurements at 10 km height: diameters > 60 µm diameters < 60 µm FSSP 2D-C Very good agreement for the ice and water microphysics
The role of aerosol particles on precipitation and ice phase processes: observation versus 3D simulations MODEL RESULTS COMPARED TO OBSERVATIONS Comparison with the disdrometer measurements at ALES Rain accumulation Rain drop spectra t2 dM (g m-3) t1 t1 t2 diameter (µm) • good agreement between the model results and the disdrometer measurements • simulated and observed raindrop spectra are also coherent
