UDBPC has Three Stages • Stage 1: The Elevator Pitch Stage • Enter at www.udbpc.com by completing a one-page online application • Each Team gets a free access to LivePlan (valued at $180!!) • Present a one minute elevator pitch about the business concept • Judges select top 10 oral presentations • Judges also select 15 semi-finalists, which move on to the second stage • Stage 2: The Cameo Round • 15 Semi-finalists write a five page “mini business plan” and have five minutes to present their business • Judges select five finalists • Stage 3: The Finals • Five finalists write a full business plan • Finalists present their business plans for 20 minutes at the competition finals
Plus a chance for even more money! • The first place winner will win the opportunity to meet with the venture capital firm, Draper Triangle LLC • 30-minute meeting to present business plan (executable until August 1, 2014) • If the plan meets Draper Triangle's investment criteria, will consider an investment up to $50,000 • Any investment subject to the completion of ordinary due diligence and the execution of binding agreements between Draper Triangle and the Winners

How the Competition Works • Three stage competition • Solo or team effort (teams 1-8 in size) • Entries that advance to the Cameo round can add team members • Each person may be listed on a maximum of two entries • However, each person can only be on one finalist team • First two stages open to everyone • Finalist round must include current UD student or UD Alumni
Details on Stage 1: The Elevator Pitch Competition • An Elevator Pitch is a one minute presentation where you • Present your idea • Cover general areas of the business: • Hook/problem statement that grabs the audience’s attention • Description of the product/service • Description of the target market • Description of how the business is different from competitors • Description of how you make money • Description of the resources needed from investors • Description of the returns the investor can expect • Tagline/pitch closing • Judges do not ask you questions
What do the Elevator Pitch judges look for? • Growth potential • Ability to execute • Quality of benefits provided • Competitiveness • Novelty/cleverness/usefulness • Quality of presentation
Details on Stage 2: The Cameo Round • 15 semi-finalists move on to the Cameo Round • Semi-finalists prepare a 5 page mini business plan • Present mini plan to judges in a 5-minute presentation • 5-minutes of Q&A with judges • Mini business plan and presentation will cover 5 areas: • Industry description and how the business will operate • Description of the competition and how they compare to your business • Description of the benefits the entry provides • Description of how you plan to enter the market, and your marketing strategy • Description of how your team is uniquely qualified to execute this business now
Details on Stage 3: The Finals • Finalist teams notified on or about December 6, 2013 • Teams are paired with mentors • Each team given 15 hours of mentor time • Finalists prepare a full business plan • Finalists present their plan in a 20-minute presentation with 10-minutes of Q&A on March 8, 2014 (tentative) • Winners are announced at the Entrepreneurship Banquet in late March or early April 2014
UDBPC Application Process • Enter at www.udbpc.com • Application system opens Saturday, September 7, 2013 • Application system closes Saturday, October 12, 2013, 5:00pm • Application asks for • Demographic information about team members • Brief description about the business concept • Judges will read this information before hearing the pitches on Saturday, October 26, 2013
UDBPC Key Dates • September 7th: Online application system opens (www.udbpc.com) • October 12th (5:00pm): Application deadline • October 26th: Stage 1—Elevator Pitch round • November 23rd: Stage 2—Cameo round • December 6th (approx.): Finalists announced • March 8th (tentative): Stage 3—Finals round • March/April (TBD): Final results announced
Competition Eligibility and Rules • Eligibility • Anyone may enter up to two plans, but can only be a finalist once • Students cannot be serving a University suspension during the competition • Rules • Work must be original and plans will be checked for plagiarism • Business must be a start-up that is 30 months old or newer as of UDBPC launch • Business must be a start-up that does not involve purchasing an existing venture • Business cannot involve pyramid-based marketing • Entries must be legal and must not violate the values and mission of the University • Business cannot require a liquor license to be legal, and its primary purpose cannot be the promotion or sale of alcohol
