BEFORE READING: Before we read the book, let’s look closely at the illustrations and the cover. In your journal, write a paragraph about what you predict the story will be about. Which pictures helped you to make the predications?
DURING READING (Part 1): Begin reading The Great Kapok Tree. The animals in the book are trying to convince the man to agree with their point of view. In your journal, record the arguments from each animal. Stop reading when the rainforest child speaks to the man.
AFTER READING (Part 1): Review your list of reasons from the animals. Write a persuasive letter to the man telling him what you think he should do when he wakes up.
DURING READING Part 2: Read the ending of the story. What did the sleeping man decide to do? How does this compare to the predications that you made in your journal before reading?
