African-American Congregation with 500 Members (Prevalence of “preventable” chronic disease*) 300 Women • 240 will be overweight (BMI > 25) • 210 will be obese (BMI > 30) • 150 with hypertension • 27 with diabetes 150 Men • 105 will be overweight • 90 will be obese • 75 with hypertension • 13 with diabetes 50 Children–most will be now be at high risk of poor health *GoodNEWS 2008 baseline data estimates

4. Consequences of Overweight and Obesity • Increased risk for: • Type 2 diabetes • coronary heart disease • high blood pressure • stroke • Cancer –cancer of the colon, rectum and prostate (men) and cancer of the gallbladder, breast, uterus, cervix and ovaries (women). • Alzheimer's-type dementia • Gallbladder disease and gallstones • Osteoarthritis - back, hip and knee joints deteriorate. • Gout - joint pain caused by deposits of uric acid crystals in the joint space • Sleep apnea – short periods when breathing stops during sleep • Psychological and social problems

5. Consequences of Hypertension or High Blood Pressure • Heart Disease – the heart has to work too hard to supply blood to the organs. • Stroke – most important risk factor for stroke. • Impaired Vision - causes blood vessels in the eye to burst or bleed. • Coronary-artery disease – causes the arteries to "harden.” • Kidney Damage – can narrow and thicken the blood vessels of the kidneys. • Heart Attack – major risk factor for heart attack. • Congestive Heart Failure - the number one risk factor.

6. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate 80% of chronic disease is preventable!
