Cross-university initiatives • Proposed ‘Max Planck Centre’ • - ‘Measurement and Observation at the Quantum Limit’: • gravitational physics/astro-photonics and quantum optics • - Partner MPI’s: Hannover (Gravitational Physics), Erlangen (Science of Light)… • - ‘Virtual Centre’ but administered from Glasgow • - Initial partners: Glasgow, Strathclyde, St. Andrews • - Support being discussed with EPSRC, STFC, SFC, MP Germany & the Universities • Quantum Information/Measurement (SUPA II) • - Stefan Kuhr, SUPA Chair in Quantum Information (Strath), with major ERC grant • - 2011 appointments of Maniscalcoand Lovett; 2012 Leach (all HW) • - Padgett-led EPSRC Programme Grant (Glasgow, Strath) • and Critical Mass Grant (Glasgow, Strath, HW) • - Quantum imaging, quantum metrology, quantum information processing, • quantum cryptography

  3. New/enhanced themes • Neurophotonics and Biophotonics • - Keith Mathieson (Strath) in Neurophotonics: SUPA/PaLS • - PG in ‘Structured Light’ (Dholakia: St. And) incl. Neurophotonics/Optogenetics • - Gail McConnell’s Chair in Biophotonics (Strath) • Hybrid and Flexible Photonics • - Hybrid inorganic/organic optoelectronics; mechanically flexible photonics and • nanomembranes • - ICT Large Grant ‘HYPIX’ (Strath, St. And, Edinburgh) • - Visible light communications and novel sensing technology • Ultrafast Photonics • - ICT Large Grant ‘MUSIC’ (St. Andrews, Strath) • - Appointments/promotions: Faccio (HW), Hunt (Strath), Thomson (HW), • Wynne (Glas) • - Cross-SUPA collaborative work • - Industrial and/or inter-disciplinary collaborations

  4. Industrial engagement and KT • Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics (F-CAP) • - Initial focus: solid state lasers and laser-based systems • - Physical centre in Glasgow, Strathclyde-linked with SUPA outreach • - £9M initial investment, including £3M from FraunhoferGesselschaft • - 5 years initial support, from June 2012 • New industry-interfacing Chairs • - e.g. Selex-Galileo Chair in Solid State Lasers at HW • EPSRC Industrial Doctorate Centre (IDC) • - Optics and Photonics Technologies • - HW, St. Andrews, Strathclyde and Glasgow • - Funded until 2018 (£10M) • - UK’s largest photonics CDT in terms of numbers of PG students (55 currently)

  5. Support/delivery mechanisms • EPSRC Programme Grant (PG) and Critical Mass (CM) Schemes • - PG in ‘Orbital angular momentum’ (Glasgow, Strath) • - PG in ‘Structured Light’ (St. And) • - Under review: PG in ‘Visible Light Communications’ (Strath, St. And, Edinburgh) • - CM in ‘Quantum Imaging’ (Glasgow, HW, Strath) • International Engagement and Profile Raising • - Max Planck Centre • - Scotland-Stanford (SU2P) EPSRC Science Bridges Programme • EPSRC Doctoral Training Centres • - IDC in ‘Optics and Photonics Technologies’ • - Proposed CDT in ‘Biophotonics’ • - Possible CDT in ‘Quantum Photonics’
