  1. Welcome to Room 410! Mr. Mahegan U.S. History II and Civics for Boston Youth Charlestown High School

  2. Introductions • Please state your name, your child’s name, and one thing that you really liked or didn’t like about history class when you were in school.

  3. About Me • Name • Henry Mahegan • Education • Bachelor of Arts in History from Trinity College in Hartford, CT • Masters of Education from UMass Boston through the Boston Teacher Residency program • Experience • Co-taught U.S. History II and AP U.S. History at Charlestown High School last year • Worked in media relations for seven years before becoming a teacher

  4. Goals and Philosophy • My goal is NOT to have students memorize the dates of battles, the order of the Presidents, or entire speeches • My goal is to teach students to draw on their own experiences to form opinions about the past and help them develop the skills to think critically about history • AND to create a safe and welcoming learning environment where it is okay to make mistakes and where students will be encouraged to express their opinions But I won’t be upset if that happens

  5. In-Class Activities • I try to make every lesson interesting and engaging • I want students to showcase their creativity whenever possible • AND I also like to reward students for a job well done

  6. Class Materials • A spiral bound notebook • A pen or pencil .75¢ What does my child need to bring to your class every day? Everything else will be provided .25¢

  7. Grading Policy • Within the course of each unit we study your child should expect… • Homework roughly twice a week • At least one quiz (announced or surprise) • A unit test • A unit project • AND a notebook check

  8. More on the Grading Policy • Your child’s grade for each term, as well as for the year will breakdown roughly like this… • Classwork – 35% • Homework – 15% • Tests/Quizzes – 20% • Notebooks – 15% • Projects – 15%

  9. Staying Connected • There are two easy ways to check on your child’s grades as well as stay connected to what is going on in this classroom… • Both of which are detailed in tonight’s handout

  10. Communication • If I haven’t already, I hope to speak with each of you individually either in person or over the phone • You have all been teaching your children for a lot longer than I ever will • Please call or email me any time • I am always looking for guest speakers or volunteers Also in tonight’s handout Henry Mahegan C – (617) 360-1754 E – hmahegan@gmail.com

  11. Parent Survey • Please take a moment to complete the survey at your desk • These survey’s are for me to get to know you and your child better and will not be used for any other purpose • If you are uncomfortable answering any of these questions please leave them blank
