eCrime Unit (eCU) • The primary mission of the eCrime Unit is to investigate and prosecute multi-jurisdictional criminal organizations, networks, and groups that perpetrate identity theft crimes, use an electronic device or network to facilitate a crime, or commit a crime targeting an electronic device, network or intellectual property. • http://oag.ca.gov/ecrime

eCU Objectives • Provides investigative and prosecutorial support to the five California regional high-tech task forces funded through the High Technology Theft Apprehension and Prosecution (HTTAP) Program Trust Fund

HTTAP Program Mission • The mission of the HTTAP Program is the investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of high technology crimes and to combat identity theft. • High technology crimes (or cybercrimes) are generally defined as any type of illegal activity that makes use of the internet, a private or public network, or an in-house computer system.
Types of Cases • Malware and malicious code • Extortion • Denial-of-service attacks • Counterfeiting and piracy • Computer viruses • Email extortion • Cyber stalking • Auction fraud • Theft of intellectual property • Reshipping • Identity theft • Phishing, pharming, spearing, and whaling • Network intrusions (hacking) • Cyber terrorism
eCU Objectives • Provides investigative, legal, and prosecutorial support for technology crime or identity theft crime investigations to those rural counties that are not represented by an HTTAP-funded task force
eCU Objectives • Provides coordination for out-of-state technology-crime or identity theft crime investigation requests
eCU Objectives • Provides legal support for state-operated digital forensic laboratories
eCU Objectives • Develops and provides training for judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers and the public on the importance of strong information-security practices and evolving technology-related or identity theft crime issues
