Autotrophs • Autotrophs are producers - Organisms that use energy from the sun to manufacture their own nutrients
Heterotrophs • Heterotrophs are consumers – Organisms that cannot manufacture their own food and must feed on other organisms
1st Order Heterotrophs • Feed directly on autotrophs • Also known as herbivores
2nd Order Heterotrophs • Feed on first-order heterotrophs • They are carnivores
3rd Order Heterotrophs • Carnivores that feed on 2nd order heterotrophs
Scavengers • Scavengers – feed on carrion and refuse
Decomposers • Decomposers – organisms that break down complex molecules of dead and decaying plants and animals
Omnivores • Omnivores – feed on both plants and animals
Food Chains • A simple model that shows how matter and energy can move through an ecosystem. • Each organism in a food chain represents a feeding step called a trophic level.
Food Webs • A food web expresses all of the possible feeding relationships between individuals in a community.
