Do now! Can you think of the names of 5 elements, and 5 compounds??
Last lesson • Know that there is a huge variety of materials. • Know how many different elements there are. • Know that all materials are made of elements combined together. • Know some of the properties of elements.
Atoms Everything on your list is made of atoms
Atoms are VERY small! If you write a full stop using a pencil, it contains about 10 000 000 000 000 atoms. .
A few different types However, there are only about 113 different types of atom
Element A substance that only contains ONE type of atom is called an element
Gold Gold is an element because it only contains ONE type of atom (gold atoms)
Oxygen Oxygen is an element because it only contains ONE type of atom (oxygen atoms)
Iodine Iodine is an element because it only contains ONE type of atom (Iodine atoms)
Water Water is NOT an element because it contains more than one type of atom
Today’s lesson • Know the names of some chemical elements • Know how to write chemical symbols for elements correctly
Symbols • If one letter, a capital
Symbols • If one letter, a capital • If two letters, capital and lower case
Symbols • If one letter, a capital • If two letters, capital and lower case WHY?
Wo • Element : WomanSymbol : Wo • Atomic mass : Accepted as 53.6 kg may vary from 40 – 200 kgOccurrence : Copious quantities in all shopping malls • Physical properties :1. Surface usually covered in painted film2. Boils at nothing, freezes without any known reason3. Melts if given special treatment4. Bitter if incorrectly usedChemical properties :1. Has great affinity for gold, silver and a range of precious stones2. Absorbs great quantities of expensive substances3. May explode spontaneously without prior warning and for no known reason4. Insoluble in liquids, but activity greatly increases by saturation in alcohol • Common uses :1. Highly ornamental, especially in sports cars2. Very effective cleaning agent • Test :1. Pure specimen turns rosy pink when discovered in natural state2. Turns green when placed beside a better specimen • Potential hazards :1. Highly dangerous except in experienced hands2. Illegal to posses more than one, although several can be maintained at different locations as long as specimens do not come into direct contact with each other.
Your own element? • On the card provided, make up your own interesting element! • Include name, symbol, appearance, properties, reactions, uses etc.
Symbols • If one letter, a capital • If two letters, capital and lower case Can you copy this please?
