Smart Metering Scenarios with Interoperability STEPHEN PATTENDEN TAHI INTEROPERABILITY GROUP
BASIC REQUIREMENTS • SEND CONSUMPTION DATA BACK TO ENERGY SUPPLIER’S MANAGEMENT SYSTEM • MUST HAVE EQUIPMENT THAT ANY ENERGY SUPPLIER CAN USE • BASIC DATA • METER ID • TOTAL CONSUMPTION • TIME OF READ • (Frequency of read) • (THESE DATA ITEMS MUST BE AN INDUSTRY STANDARD) • REGULATORY • CUSTOMER DISPLAY (ON METER)
BASIC REQUIREMENTS + • REQUIREMENTS FOR METER SENT TO METER (AT LEAST): • SET FREQUENCY OF READ • CONTACTOR ON/OFF • AD-HOC READ? • (SUCH COMMANDS MUST BE STANDARD)
BASIC METER REQUIRMENTS • MUST MEASURE ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION INPORT/EXPORT ACCORDING TO MID • MUST HAVE ABILITY TO SWITCH OFF/ON POWER • MUST COMMUNICATE RELIABLY • OPTIONS FOR COMMUNICATION • USE TELEPHONE NETWORK DIRECTLY GSM OR ANALOGUE LINE • USE LOCAL BROADBAND NETWORK • USE DEDICATED HOME SYSTEM NETWORK • OR ANY FUTURE METHOD • MUST HAVE SOME STANDARD COMMUNICATION PORT • NO CONTACTING PARTS • IE. OPTICAL OR SOME PROXIMITY RF METHOD
OPTICAL OR SOME PROXIMITY RF METHOD • THIS IMPLIES THE USE OF A COMMUNICATION MODULE
METER DATA COMMUNICATION • REGARDLESS OF COMMUNICATION METHOD - THE TRANSFER OF DATA BETWEEN METER AND ENERGY SUPPLIER MUST BE: • RELIABLE – EVERY DATA ITEM MUST BE DELIVERED • SECURE – THE DATA MAY ONLY BE SENT TO/SEEN BY ENTITIES (people, organisations, machines) THAT HAVE PERMISSION TO RECEIVE/SEE IT. • TIMELY – ANY DELAY IN DATA TRANSMISSION MUST BE CLEARLY DEFINED IN SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENTS (Relates to Quality of Service) • Note: some methods of transmission are inherently less reliable than others. • THE COMMUNICATION MODULE WILL COMMUNICATE VIA: • RADIO (RF) • WHICH MAY IMPLY GSM DIRECTLY TO SUPPLIER IMS • OR WIFI, BLUETOOTH, ZIGBEE, ZWAVE TO SECONDARY COMMUNICATION DEVICE IN PREMISES - EG. RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY • POWERLINE • SO MUST BE CONNECTED TO MAINS • COMMUNICATING WITH SYSTEM ON LV SUPPLY – EG. GSM CONCENTRATOR AT SUB STATION • COMMUNICATING WITH SECONDARY COMMUNICATION DEVICE IN PREMISES – EG. RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY • CABLE • DIRECTLY TO ANALOGUE PHONE LINE OR SECONDARY COMMUNICATION DEVICE
COMMUNICATION MODULE • WHILE METER IS CERTIFIED MEASURING DEVICE, THE COMMUNICATIONS MODULE MAY NOT BE – IF THIS IS THE CASE • IF CONTACTLESS - CAN BE CONSUMER FITTED (SENT BY POST) • MUST BE ATTACHED TO METER BY SIMPLE LATCH OR MECHANISM THAT THE USER CAN UNDO TO REPLACE MODULE • MUST BE A LIMITATION ON DURATION OF POWER SUPPLY TO CUSTOMERS IF MODULE IS REMOVED. (WITHOUT MODULE METER CANNOT BE READ REMOTELY) • WHERE COMMUNICATION GOES VIA GATEWAY OR LOCAL NETWORK THERE NEEDS TO BE PROTECTION AGAINST BROKEN COMMUNICATION • (EVENT ALERT IN CASE OF BROKEN COMMUNICATION, MODULE STORAGE OF CONSUMPTION DATA) • MODULES CAN COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER DEVICES/METERS IN PREMISE • TO ENABLE ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND OTHER APPLICATIONS • MODULES MAY HOLD COST OF CONSUMPTION, HISTORIC AND REALTIME • MODULES MAY BE INTEROGATED FOR THIS INFORMATION • SUCH INFORMATION SHOULD BE IN STANDARD FORMAT.
BASIC + MORE DEVICES • REQUIREMENT TO READ OTHER METERS? • LIKELY TO USE HOME SYSTEM FOR COMMUNICATION WITH OTHER METERS (NOT A FUNCTION OF MODULE) • REQUIREMENT TO USE TELCO SERVICES SUCH AS ADSL? • HOW ACCESSED?
BASIC + MORE DEVICES • REQUIREMENT TO COMMUNICATE AND CONTROL OTHER DEVICES? • HOME APPLIANCES – WHITE GOODS • SECURITY SENSORS • HEATING SENSORS • ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS • (Leading to Telecare Systems)
BASIC + MORE DEVICES • REQUIREMENT TO COMMUNICATE AND CONTROL OTHER DEVICES? • HOME APPLIANCES – WHITE GOODS • SECURITY SENSORS • HEATING SENSORS • ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS • (Leading to Telecare Systems) • REQUIREMENT FOR A RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY? • Using RF to communicate with other devices.
• AND OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS
INTEROPERABILITY ASPECTS • THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS ARE: • SIMPLE METER WITH COMMUNICATION MODULE – STANDARD COMMUNICATION I/F • RELIABLE COMMUNICATION PATH TO ANY SUPPLIER’S SYSTEM • STANDARD DATA FORMATS, ADDRESSING, COMMAND SET • THIS DELIVERS SMART METER INTEROPERABILITY • EXTENDED INTEROPERABILITY TO • UTILISE RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY • SET UP ENERGY MANAGEMENT SERVICES • LINK TO OTHER DEVICES • SHARE (SOME) DATA WITH OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS (TELECARE, SECURITY, ETC..) • USE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM FOR CUSTOMER DISPLAY • CAVEATS • MUST ENSURE THAT USING PATHS VIA HOME NETWORKS AND RESIDENTIAL GATEWAYS DOES NOT COMPROMISE REVENUE INFORMATION. • MUST PROVIDE OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS ACCESS AND ALLOW CHANGE OF SUPPLIER • IT IS EXPECTED MOST SOLUTIONS WILL USE THE RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY APPROACH SINCE THE COMMUNICATION ASPECT WILL BE MUCH CHEAPER OR FREE. • BUT THE “RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY” IS ILL DEFINED AT PRESENT.
