  1. In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus and the Samaritan Woman February 8, 2008 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  2. Review • Who were the Samaritans? • Where is Samaria? • Who or what did they worship? • Where did they worship? • How were they looked upon by the Jews? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. Jesus Leaves Judea • John 4:1-4 • “1Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2(although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were), 3He left Judea and went away again into Galilee. 4And He had to pass through Samaria. 5So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph; 6and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  4. For Discussion • Why would it matter to Jesus what the Pharisees did or didn’t know about His efforts? • Why would John make note of the fact that Jesus was not doing the baptizing Himself? • Jesus leaves Judea for Galilee • Why did He HAVE to pass through Samaria? • What was the usual custom of the Jews? • Why? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  5. Judea to Galilee www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. Jacob’s Well www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  7. At Jacob’s Well • John 4:7-9 • “7There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink.’ 8For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, ‘How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?’ (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  8. For Discussion • Did it really take all of the disciples to go to town to get food? • No, Jesus likely wanted to be alone • He was tired from the journey and wanted to rest • Why would the woman be surprised that Jesus would ask her for a drink? • There was tremendous racial and cultural prejudice between Jews and Samaritans www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  9. Views About Women • Rabbinical Teaching: • “A man shall not be alone with a woman in an inn, not even with his sister or his daughter, on account of what men may think. A man shall not talk with a woman in the street, not even with his own wife, and especially not with another woman, on account of what men may say.” • Ancient Jewish Prayer: • “Blessed art Thou, O Lord ... Who hast not made me a woman.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  10. Living Water • John 4:10-12 • “10Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, “Give Me a drink,” you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.’ 11She said to Him, ‘Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? 12You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?’” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  11. The Well Itself • Jacob’s Well is fed by an underground spring and the water, therefore, is moving, cool and fresh • The ancients said its water was “Living Water” • Jesus is possibly playing on that fact with His comment • The woman doesn’t show surprise at Jesus’ use of the term “Living Water”, but instead asks how He would retrieve it without a means to draw it www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  12. Eternal Water • John 4:13-14 • “13Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.’ 15The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.’” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  13. For Discussion • How does Jesus respond to her question? • He shifts the conversation from the physical to the spiritual • What does He offer her? • Do you think she took really Him literally, or did she have some idea of what he was saying? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  14. Call Your Husband • John 4:16-20 • “16He said to her, ‘Go, call your husband and come here.’ 17The woman answered and said, ‘I have no husband.’ Jesus said to her, ‘You have correctly said, “I have no husband”; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.’ 19The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20“Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.’” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  15. For Discussion • Jesus demonstrates his intimate knowledge of the woman’s situation • Some commentators see the five husbands as figurative for the gods of the five nations that were settled in this region by the Assyrians (Read 2 Kings 17:24-28) • However those nations collectively served seven “gods” • Notice how the woman immediately changes the subject to the location of worship www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  16. In Spirit & Truth • John 4:21-24 • “21Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.’” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  17. For Discussion • What “hour is coming” that will change the pattern of worship? • What does Jesus mean by worshipping in “spirit and in truth”? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  18. I Am He • John 4:25-26 • “25The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.’ 26Jesus said* to her, ‘I who speak to you am He.’” NASB • The Greek does not have the word “He” • It simply reads “I Am” • In spite of His avoidance of Messiah claims in Judea, He shows no such inhibition here www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  19. The Disciples Return • John 4:27-30 • “27At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, ‘What do You seek?’ or, ‘Why do You speak with her?’ 28So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, 29‘Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?’ 30They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  20. For Discussion • What are the disciples thinking to themselves when they return? • What does the woman do during this interlude? • What is her motivation? • Note that she leaves her waterpot • Something more important is at hand • She will return • What happens in response to her comments to her fellow citizens? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  21. Rabbi, Eat • John 4:31-34 • “31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, ‘Rabbi, eat.’ 32But He said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you do not know about.’ 33So the disciples were saying to one another, ‘No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?’ 34Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.’” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  22. For Discussion • What do the disciples urge Jesus to do? • How does Jesus respond? • Jesus also has a lesson for His disciples • Do the disciples understand His response? • He turns their attention from the physical to the spiritual, as well • Jesus is sustained by doing the will of the Father • Yes, physical nourishment is necessary • But REAL sustenance comes from the Father www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  23. The Fields Are White • John 4:35-38 • “35Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. 36Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37For in this case the saying is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  24. For Discussion • What is Jesus saying to His disciples in this passage? • There is a waiting period between physical sowing and harvest • With spiritual harvest there is no need to wait • In agriculture, the one who sows is often different from the one who reaps • This is also the case in spiritual matters • However, both can rejoice at the harvest • Who are the “others” that Jesus refers to? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  25. Many Samaritans Believe • John 4:39-42 • “39From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, ‘He told me all the things that I have done.’ 40So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41Many more believed because of His word; 42and they were saying to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.’” NASB www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  26. In Closing • In spite of Jesus’ spotless Jewish heritage, He was able to bridge the gap between Jews and Samaritans • He did not allow preconceived notions to interfere • He abandoned racial and cultural bigotry • He crossed cultural norms • He met people where they were • The result? • Many respond and follow Him • “Go and Do Likewise” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
