Overview of our mentoring Three stands that interlink for the PRT SMG School Curriculum Classroom HOD Mentor PRT
SMG of the School • They Introduce: • School administration and school policies • Staff manual including Rewards and Punishments policy. • Electronic administration systems • PRT handbook • Registration requirements
Head of Department • Department scheme • Curriculum year plans • Class lists and data • Liaise with them about curriculum delivery. • Observations.
Classroom Mentors • PRT’s Classroom practice • Establish set up of classroom routines • Classroom observations • Monitor progress • Suggest and discuss strategies • Liaise with HOD • All year • Supported by mentoring handbook and mentoring manager and experienced mentors. • SCT
Mentoring programme • Supportive PRT coordinator • Mutually free period • SCT • Mentoring Manager • Team of mentors. • Handbook • Internal School staff drive on intranet with supporting documentation.
Handbook Karamu High School Mentoring Handbook Name________________ PRT Name____________ • Handbook • Internal School staff drive on intranet with supporting documentation.
Importance of Support • Week ‘0’ – induction starts: • SCT led PD • Meeting with mentors • Pressure points in the year acknowledged • Stress being objectified
Issues with Mentoring Programme and Parts • Consistency of the mentoring given. • It is not long enough i.e. more time allocated to support Year 2 Parts. • What to do when PRT is not being reflective and does not act upon advice/guidance. • Cases of Parts being ‘loaded’ by school with extra responsibility. • Cases of Parts (and mentors) being time overloaded – ‘unders’ and ‘overs’.
Where To From Here • Mentoring library • Develop handbook further. • Establish a core of practised mentors • Establish a support group of Parts – especially for PRT2 year. • Entrench support programme for Parts in the school.
