ArcGIS Issues Oct 3 2011
Oct 4 to mimic our issue • Launch ArcGIS 10 on your computer • You are standard user • Must have c:/temp as writeable by you • Download ftp://ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/abegis/asm540/Spatial_tutorial.zip to c:/temp and unzip there • Use ArcGIS file menu to open C:\Temp\Spatial_tutorial\asm540_spatial.mxd
Oct 4 to mimic our issue • Behind the scene, this file you are going to open has set default working space to c:/temp rather then your “profile”, which does not seem to be very acceptable to Arcgisprogram. • \\guardian.ics.purdue.edu\theller\My Documents\ArcGIS\Default.gdb seems to drastically slow functions ( 10 X time to write same data versus C:\Temp\Spatial_tutorial\class.gdb) • I think the default also leads to more probs during calculations
Problem 1 – very long time to open arcToolbox. A known issue at semester start, it seems worse. Touch this tool to open it. This really should not take 10 minutes. I think the difficulty (freeze-up) we see when users later try using network directories is also related to this( we can disable network data search - may be good solution to freeze-ups) . Current default workspace/scratch space is geodatabase in network copy of profile and is faster, more rugged to use c:/temp instead.
2 3 1 Next Problem 2, and the show-stopper so far Double-click this layer name to launch symbology; select “classified” if needed, touch “classify” and see error
This symbology tool should be populated with options (by the “graphic server”) This is next screen
End of error replication • Next we look at some suggs for pre-installation checks and patches

But if there is not a VALUE RegistrySizeLimit, you will create it and then modify it. • One additional update to apply is to install MSXML4 SP3 and one update. You can download them from these links: MSXML4 SP3 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=enMSXML4 SP3 patch KB973685 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=en
“pause” default network data searches • One of the first things I would do in any case is shutoff the Search indexing. • Do that from ArcCatalog --> Windows --> Search, click on the "Index / Search Configuration" button at the top of the panel. • A dialog box will open and click on the "Pause Indexing". I leave this feature disabled in general as it is not worth the performance impact the indexing entails, and if you are indexing remote database servers--horrors. Do that by setting the hours and days settings to 1800, and removing all items from the Register Folders and Server Connections listing--in any case be sure the "Skip server connections.." is checked and the "Indexing Status" shows Paused. You can delete the index as well for good measure. OK to save. • Exit from ArcCatalog and now delete the ArcToolbox configuration file--ArcToolbox.dat, it is located at: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\Desktop10.0\ArcToolbox\ArcToolbox.dat • A new one is created at next launch
