ENERGY CLUSTERThe Industrial Cluster for Energyestablished by Regione Lombardia Milano, 11 marzo 2011 Silvia Pagani – Euroimpresa Legnano Industrial cluster for power generation, transmission and distribution
Industrial plant engineering in Italy and Lombardy region • The Italian industrial, civil and infrastructural plant engineering chain, 2009 profit :145 billion Euros (source Federprogetti ) • Power generation sector (production and distribution plants and components): equal to15% -18 billion Euros (source Federprogetti ) 50% of plant engineering in Lombardy region In the Lombardy region power generation stands for: 2
Energy Cluster: an industrial cluster established by Regione Lombardia An industrial cluster for energy, a network made “by the firms for the firms” with the specific intent to promote and to create an integrated supply chain in different fields of energy plant investment, and to aggregate small and medium enterprises. A cluster aimed at consolidating and capture the actual and future technical expertise thanks also to the presence of a large number of research centres and universities specialized in energy sector. A cluster promoted and supported by important firms, leaders in the field of energy, a network recognized as a supplier of excellence, providing quality products and services: a “made in Italy” in connection with the world. “Energy Cluster” has been officialy established by Regione Lombardia as a new emerging industrial network in the region. We are made in Italy aswell… 3
Mission Support member companies to become more competitive: - operating on the market with a wide portfolio - with support of academic institutions - by involving R&D institutions - satisfying needs of large demanding clients • Operating as a network to reinforce and to develop the member companies to an everlasting competiveness, growth, product quality and human resources; • Improve international visibility, markets knowledge, competence and ability to operate on international markets; • Consolidate the excellence in power generation, transmission and distribution business by increasing synergies among all institutions and companies in the region. 4

Energy Cluster: the chain of suppliers Shared strategies, research and marketing, enterprise services coexist with competition within the Cluster. This logic can be expressed in terms of “CO-OPETITION”: enterprises invest on networking and relation so to make the maximum profit. Unfinished products Basic Components Finished Products Systems Services Finished products components / production facilities fittings Activities, services, processing and products for maintenance and renovation of production facilities Products used for basic components Systems and products used in power generation and distribution • Energy Cluster is a horizontal chain able to create vertical cooperation so to satisfy the clients needs. • The client refers to a sole supplier • Enterprises act as an integrated supply chain offering the client a “complete package”, also on a turn key basis.

Cluster management KEY PRINCIPLES All the cluster decisions are takenbycompanies (Cluster Board) All the projects are realised involving the competencies within the Energy cluster network The cluster associative life is managed by the supplychaingroups, which are representative of the different souls Instruments Strategicguidelines (2009 – 2012) Annual Operative Plans

Technology area – supply chain groups Needs, opportunities and targets are spotted in each sector and matched with enterprises’ potential. Each working group singles out specific operative objectives Research Centers and Universities are involved • Subgroups are created coinciding with the integrated “areas” in the supply chain • The client refers to a sole supplier • The enterprises act as a group offering the client a “complete package” Innovative projects are under development in cooperation with the research system Supply chain group 1: medium/large conventional utility power plants Supply chain group 2: nuclear power plant Supply chain group 3: renewable energy (biomass, solar, wind..) Supply chain group 4: medium/large medium/large conventional utility power plants Supply chain group 5: transmission and distribution (future technologies)
