Search Engine Optimization Is… • …tweaking your site so it appears higher in search results • …having your site listed for relevant searches • …a potential way to increase your Web traffic
Search Engine Optimization Is Not… • …tricking search engines to place your site higher • …a glut of keywords • …search engine spam • …the only thing to think about when creating a Web site
What are the 3 tips • Title tag • Page text • Alt text on images
Will these changes put you first? No. (But they can help place you higher.)
Tip 1: What is the Title Bar? • The blue bar at the top of your browser • How do you edit it? • Html: it’s the <title> tag within the header • Dreamweaver: • Modify -> Page Properties • Select “Title/Encoding” • Enter text in title field • Click OK
Tip 1: Why the Title Bar? • Given a lot of weight with almost every search engine. • Every search engine supports the title tag to some extent. • Often appears as the link in a search engine.
Tip 1: How do we use it? • Enter keyword phrase or key words. • Differing opinions on which is better—phrase or word list • Since the title tag is used in Google as a link, I recommend a phrase • Try to use a phrase not mentioned in the text.
Tip 1: What to avoid • All caps • A novel in the title—keep it short • Many search engines only display 60-115 characters • SPAM--don’t place repeated words together • Bad: Soccer Gear. Gear for all your Soccer endeavors. • Better: Soccer Gear. From cleats to shorts. All the gear you need. • Best: Soccer Gear. Cleats, shorts, & more in our Saratoga Springs store.
Tip 2: Why the Page Text? • Search engines rely on text to understand and classify your page/site.
Tip 2: How do we write it? • Determine your message. • To whom are you writing? • What are you selling? • What is this page’s focus? • Define your keywords • (what would be used to find you in a search) • Write readable, engaging, and related content incorporating the keywords
Tip 2: What to avoid • Writing for the search engine and not your audience. • Forcing text onto a page that where it doesn’t work. • Keywords connected by vague or weak phrases. • Using every keyword you have. • Relying on “density ratios” and formulas.
Tip 3: What is Alt Text? • Text alternative for an image • Used by visually impaired visitors • How do you edit it? • Html: it’s the alt property in the <img> tag (i.e. <img src=“suggestImg.gif” border=“0” width=“50” height=“50” alt=“Suggest an image”>) • Dreamweaver: • Image Properties • Alt field
Tip 3: Why the Alt Text? • Search engines don’t index images, only text. • Alt text is indexed by many search engines.* • “Potential to increase the page keyword density score.” • Bonus! It enhances your audience’s experience.
Tip 3: Why not the Alt Text? However… • Google, Yahoo!, and MSN no longer considers ALT text when determining relevancy because of spamming tactics. • "'We see ALT text as relevant as the Keyword Meta tag,’ said the Google engineer. That should say it all as Google has never used the Keyword Meta tag due to the high spam rate.”http://www.searchengineguide.com/aws/2005/0830_aws1.html
Tip 3: Should you use Alt Text? YESSS!!!!!
Tip 3: Why use the Alt Text? • The text is still indexed. • Some SEO experts feel that the algorithm could change in the future. • Enhances audience experience. • Visually impaired visitor • Broken images
Do these 3 tips work? Yes… • Increases your ranking by incorporating relevant keywords. • Strengthens your message. • Gets you to think about your audience • Why are they at your site? • What would they be looking for? • What are they thinking? • Helps your visitors understand your site • Alt tags • Better text = better (and clearer) message
Do these 3 tips work? …and no. • You probably won’t be ranked number 1. • Search Engine algorithms change • Stop spam • Stay competitive/relevant • Nothing is foolproof. • Done poorly and you pay • Spam affects the algorithms • Removed from index • Alienate your audience
