  1. The Republic of Ghana A story about Ghana and its people
  2. Ghana is located on the gold coast of Africa and was originally colonized by the English. Because of this, Ghana’s culture has adopted many English aspects.
  3. During English rule Ghana was a crown colony and was one of the major trading ports of Africa. Ghana still relies on trade for most of their countries income.
  4. In 1957 Ghana was the first Sub-Saharan country to gain its independence.
  5. Although some of Ghana’s land has rich gold and jewel deposits, its main export is agriculture. With over 66% of its population working in agriculture.
  6. Ghana ranks 135 out of 187 countries on the United Nations Development Programme's 2011 Human Development Index.
  7. Although the south of Ghana has two growing Seasons, most of the north is draught prone and has no agricultural opportunities.
  8. Due to Ghana’s high poverty rates many of the popular traditional games and sports played in Ghana require little equipment and require a high level of endurance such as soccer and Snake tag.
  9. The two most popular sports in Ghana are Cricket and Soccer, which both sprout from their English colonization.
  10. Soccer in Ghana is by far the most popular sport. Ghana has won the African cup 4 times since there first appearance in 1963. Possessing the second most African Cup titles behind Egypt.
  11. In 2010 Ghana was the third African team in history to make it to the FIFA world cup quarter finals. Ghana’s national team is currently ranked 22rd by FIFA.
  12. Ghanaian soccer players play on teams around the world and are known for their competitive, aggressive, and active style of play.
  13. A popular traditional Ghanaian game, is a competitive tag game played by all children, called Snake tag.
  14. Both soccer and snake tag are team games best played with large numbers. Both of these games also require little equipment and require a high level of endurance and foot eye coordination.
  15. Due to the demanding agricultural jobs possessed by many Ghanaians, physical endurance is a valuable quality to have. Both soccer and snake tag are cheap and fun ways to help build this skill.
  16. Due to Ghana’s history of tribal villages/communities this could also explain the emphasis on team and group games/sports.
  17. Snake tag also demonstrates the movement of snakes and the importance to stay away from the snake’s mouth. This is important because Ghana is home to 2 of the top 10 most poisonous snakes in the world and 6 of the top ten most poisonous snakes in African
