Powered Speakers
Powered Speakers From Home Theatres to concerts and festivals, speakers of all shapes and forms are used to provide euphoric atmosphere for party goers and home entertainment alike. For your home theatre, you want to be immersed in the moment with whatever film or show you may be watching. At a concert, you might want to be overwhelmed by the power of your favourite band or your favourite track. It is important realize that you must choose the speaker that performs best in the areas that are most important to you. When choosing a powered speaker, we suggest that you do your speaker auditioning in an acoustically neutral room, such as we have in our Waltham listening facility. In-home listening evaluations can be very helpful too, particularly if you have either a good sounding room or a room that you won't be changing for a while. How do Powered Speakers work? Powered speakers or self-powered speakers are loudspeakers that have built-in amplifiers. With active or passive crossovers placed in the loudspeakers, it enables the speakers to play high frequencies and low frequencies at the same time. Which one is for you? Some passive loud speakers still have an external power amplifier and therefore require an audio signal cable as well as AC power cable. It is important to recognize the two types of powered speakers as they can determine the man hours as well as the size / weight of each speaker. For regular Home Theatre enthusiasts, active speakers might be the easier way to go as it decreases the complexity of setting crossover frequencies. Cabling can be slightly more difficult since it requires two cables, an AC power cable and a signal cable (Usually XLR – XLR or ¼ - XLR). Note: that just because you have a power speaker, doesn’t mean that you have an active powered speaker. Your speaker still might have crossover components that are passive. Both types of powered speakers have their pros and cons. Having hundreds of different kinds of brands and configurations does solve the complexity of the problem of “which one is for you”. At the end of the day, it is important to realize that you have to envision the speaker you want to purchase as part of whole and it should satisfy your audiovisual needs.
