The Qur’an The Islamic scripture
Basics of Qur’an Beliefs Qur’an means “recitation” and is called this because reciting the Qur’an is believed to be the best way to communicate it. (Reciting it in Arabic is the fully authoritative version)
Holiness of the Qur’an The Qur’an is believed to be divine because it is believed to the God’s Word (which was revealed to Muhammad over a period of twenty years). After Muhammad’s death, his followers became concerned that variations of what was said to Muhammad would arise and spread, instead they thought it was necessary to establish a single authorized version.
Repetitive The Qur’an is repetitive mainly because it is not a carefully constructive argument divided into segments, nor is it a series of stories. Instead it is a body of sermons or utterances that repeats images and themes.
Everyone is included! The Qur’an includes a number of individuals who are also in the Torah and Bible: Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus, Mary, and others. *What does this tell you about the three Abrahamic religions?
Advice The Qur’an also gives practical admonitions about everyday life- about property rights, inheritance, marriage, divorce and more.
Suras The Qur’an has 114 chapters which are called suras. Each sura has a traditional name which came from an image or topic discussed in the sura(ie: Thunder, Light, The Cave, etc). The order of the suras does not represent the chronological order they were revealed in. Except for the first sura which is very short, the rest are arranged in order by length- from long to short.
Qur’an as Art Because Islam prohibits the use of images, often the Qur’an itself is a work of art. The calligraphy used to record the sacred words of the Qur’an are wonderful and stunning.
