  1. Julius Caesar Act III, IV

  2. Let’s Recap…Iambic Pentameter Here is your first task…You have 5 minutes. In your table groups… • Find (1) line that is in iambic pentameter. Be sure you can identify why it is iambic pentameter. • Find (1) line that is not iambic pentameter. Be sure you can explain why it is not iambic pentameter. • Choose a Scribe to come to the board and write one of the lines without identifying if it is in iambic pentameter or not. • Then, choose an Orator to speak on behalf of the group. As a class, you will come to a consensus about each line and then the group’s orator will reveal if the class is right or wrong and why it either is or is not iambic pentameter.

  3. Act 3, Scene 1 • Your turn to summarize! • There are 3 scenes in Act 3. • Each scene will be summarized by two different table groups. • One group will summarize all of Act 3 • Each table will share their summary with the class

  4. Act III • The death of Caesar, 3:1:1-85 • Brutus funeral oratory 3:2:14-36 • Antony funeral oratory 3:2:82-117 • Does anyone have any comprehension-related questions? • Need an explanation of a term or phrase? • *Caveat! Before I’ll explore the question with you, at least one other person needs to try to answer it first!

  6. Homework • Finish Act IV • Monday: PORTFOLIOS ARE DUE! Grammar quiz • We will also review Act IV, and if there’s time, we’ll start Act V. • Tuesday: Socratic Seminar of Julius Caesar, with a focus on the funeral oratories.

  7. Speaking of the Socratic Seminar… • Socratic Seminars function best with a specific goal – specific lines to analyze. • I want you to focus on the oratories; however, I don’t want you to “put on blinders” and ignore the rest of the play. • Take the whole play into account as you analyze the oratories. Motivations, why, arguments, etc. Really think beyond their words.

  8. Need Some Reading Guidance? • Think about the main character’s tone of voice. It’ll help you identify quotes easier on the test. • If it sounds familiar, it’s probably a famous line. Take note of who speaks it. • Think about all the arguments you read in Julius Caesar. We don’t have time to discuss them all, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t important.
