Zorbing • Zorbing is a sport involving a zorber being strapped inside a giant ball (the Zorb) made out of transparent plastic. Zorbing is performed at commercial locations, with riders paying for a day’s activity.
HISTORY • The Zorb ball was designed after the hamster ball. In 1973, a ball similar to the Zorb was released. In the early 1980s, the Dangerous Sports Club (DSC) made a giant sphere that held to deck chairs inside. This device was eventually cut up into scrap plastic. The present Zorb balls were created in 1994, by Dwane van der Sluis and Andrew Akers.
Construction • The Zorb Ball is double-sectioned, with one ball contained within the other with air in between. This acts as a shock absorber, cushioning riders while moving. Orbs are lightweight and made out of transparent, thin plastic. Many orbs have straps to keep the rider in place, but some are strapless, allowing the rider to walk around in it or be tossed around by the movement. Orbs have one or two tunnel-like entrances.
