  6. Warm-up Activity • List some animals which you are familiar, such as dog, cat, parrot, monkey, etc. • Rank those animals according to their intelligence, explain the reason. You can cite examples, personal experiences, or scientific findings, etc. to support your views.

(Para 2) • Paraphrase: • Animal show great intelligence when they deal with human beings’ captivity even though human beings control and dominate this planet.

  11. Sentence study 2. But the orangutan’s understanding of money seemed to extend far beyond simple dealings. (Para 5) Paraphrase: What the orangutan understands is more than just simple dealings.

I’m convinced that he is honest. e.g. 你要使他们相信你渴望得到这份工作。 You need to convince them of your desire for the job. You need to convince them that you desire for the job.

I’m relieved that nobody was hurt. relief n.

  25. Words and Phrases 10. in one’s interest (s): = for or to one’s advantage e.g. It would be in your interests to undertake this task although it’s very difficult.

  26. Words and Phrases 11. size up: = carefully examine (a situation or person ) in order to make a judgment e.g. I don’t like the way the sales assistants in that shop size you up as you walk through the door.

  27. Words and Phrases 12. look sb. in the eye: = look directly and steadily at sb. because you are not embarrassed or ashamed e.g. I couldn’t look him in the eye afterwards, knowing that I had lost all that money.

  28. Words and Phrases 13. wipe out: = get rid of or destroy e.g. The bank agreed to wipe out their debts. e.g. The population of the island was almost wiped out by the disease.
